Living Library: Gender Equality - 17th April, Bologna

llustration by Maria Beatrice Tarabusi for COTAF Project - Connected Towns for a Shared Future

Apr 10, 2026

Stories, voices and conversations about Gender Equality

On April 17, the first Living Library event dedicated to the theme of Gender Equality will take place in Bologna, promoted by Fondazione Yunus Italia.

The initiative represents an opportunity for meeting, listening, and dialogue on a key issue for building more inclusive and aware communities.

The event is part of the European project COTAF – Connected Towns for a Shared Future (funded under the CERV – Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme of the European Commission), which promotes intercultural dialogue and active participation through the direct involvement of local communities.

The meeting will open with institutional greetings from Regional Councillor Simona Lembi, together with the project partners involved in the initiative: Associazione MondoDonna Onlus, Casa delle Donne per non subire violenza, and Refresh Academy soc. coop. sociale.

The Format

The Living Library is a participatory format that originated in Denmark and has spread across Europe: “living books” are real people who share their stories with readers through brief and authentic conversations, breaking down prejudice and opening spaces for mutual understanding. The COTAF project brings this tool to Italy, with a specific focus on gender equality, migrant inclusion, European values, and active citizenship.

The Topics

During the event, a range of themes and stories related to gender equality will be explored, including:

  • daily work in anti-violence centers;

  • experiences of exploitation and modern forms lavery;

  • gender-based discrimination;

  • education and activism for gender equality;

  • experiences related to domestic violence.

Moments of listening will alternate with informal spaces for meeting and discussion, designed to foster authentic connections among participants, who will have the opportunity to engage with the living books - individuals who share first-hand experiences, perspectives, and expertise related to different dimensions of gender equality.

The event is open to the public and participation is free of charge.
